The long countdown is almost done! 9 months we've been preparing for this trip and with all the planning and talking about it, it truly felt like it would never come. Now that go time is two weeks away, it feels a bit surreal!
We should tell you who we are, for all you family and friendsies who know us well we hardly need any introduction.. but for anyone stumbling upon this blog who don't know us let us introduce ourselves! We are two Canadians chicks (get it, Free Range chicks lol), Giselle and LeeAnn! We are in our mid 20's and we became close friends throughout university and in the years since! We decided to do this trip together when we both realized that we had a passion for travelling and adventure and after a couple of years of shooting ideas of random places to travel we finally brought our idol chats to reality! We guess you could say we are fortunate in the fact that we found a friend in each other to share this love of adventure with.
We would like to thank the waitress at Montana's back on the cold February night that gave us the final push to make this trip happen. We were dining with another friend (shoutout to our homeboy Jake), fantasizing about how cool it would be to live abroad for a year when she joined in and suggested housesitting. We kind of acknowledged the idea at the time, and this time instead of talking and laughing about it for a couple of days.. the conversation just never ended. Next thing we knew we had plane tickets to Australia, with a two week stop over in the Fiji Islands, and a 12-month Work and Holiday Visa. There was talk about other places but we ultimately decided on Australia for our big adventure because of a few factors: the ability to speak the language; the proximity to other regions of the world such as Southeast Asia and the South Pacific Islands; and the prospect of not seeing snow for a year! Our plan is to do a 13 month trip, starting with the two weeks in Fiji, on to Australia for the majority of the time, with a week or two in New Zealand, and Southeast Asia to end it all with a bang.
One piece of advice we could offer if anyone else out there is planning a trip like this is to take your time with the planning process. We found that by setting the date 9 months away gave us plenty of time to research, save money and to find the best flight and accommodation deals out there. We feel we've saved hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars by allowing ourselves adequate planning time.
Now the real challenge begins, fitting everything we need into 50 litre backpacks!
Until next time!
